At Top Applicant, we always recommend that job seekers play to their strengths when applying for positions. However, it can be hard to figure out what those strengths really are!
To help applicants discover the qualities that make them qualified candidates, we recommend the following career interest and skills assessment tests.
Career Interest Assessments
Before jumping directly into a skills assessment, we find that narrowing down your search to specific career paths can help you focus on the skills needed to land a job! Here are the top assessments we recommend to understand your possible career pathways.
Holland Code (RIASEC) Test
Developed by John L. Holland with research beginning in the 1950s, the Holland Occupational Themes theory categorizes people into 6 types of occupations. Categories include positions that are Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). By asking you to rate your anticipated enjoyment of 48 different career tasks, this test is designed to identify potential career paths that align with your natural interests and preferences. O*NET Interest Profiler
If you’re not sure what career paths to explore, O*NET can help! This online tool expands on the Holland Code by helping people explore career options that are more directly based on their interests, skills, and values. Skills Assessments
This is where pen meets paper for your career search! In each skills assessment, we recommend answering every question truthfully. Remember, this is all about you, so there’s no right or wrong answer. To uncover hidden skills, or dig deeper into ones you already know of—these are some of your best options!
Skills Profiler
The OECD skills profiling tool is a great starting point to identify your skill set with assessments that evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in areas like communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork. Your results can also help identify areas for improvement and career suggestions from the OECD database. Just choose a username and start the assessment!
WorkKeys
The ACT WorkKeys Curriculum is another excellent series of tests that evaluates foundational skills essential for workplace success. This assessment includes questions about applied mathematics, researching ideas, and reading for information. Each course has unique pre-course and end of level checks to personalize your assessment to your individual strengths and clearly identify areas for improvement.
Before jumping into this assessment, you’ll need to talk to an ACT rep and pay for the curriculum. Our experts also recommend reaching out to your current employer about assistance options for continued growth. With employer support, it gets even easier for you to level up your understanding and your career! Learn more about WorkKeys.
